Licensing

1. Who is Splendid City useful for?

Splendid City is for experienced sports schedulers who are looking for a program that will quickly put together a schedule modeled by the constraints imposed by day to day scheduling problems that one normally encounters, i.e.. field availability, conflict management, equal distribution of games per team as well as equal home field distribution, or alternating field distribution with home team designations, and manage these problems without having to obtain too much computer technical knowledge to work the program.

The intuitive layout of Splendid City allows for the break down of large schedules into smaller more manageable divisions, with the option to merge the smaller schedules into one larger massive schedule as well as, separated field, team, and division schedules. The program issues a 'report evaluation' on each built schedule as an aid to schedulers to find bugs and inconsistencies with the structure of their schedules.

Schedulers have 'complete control' over the time frame of the games. Using a 'games per date' algorithm, even the most erratic scheduling problems can be achieved with great ease.

For example, dates can vary 'wildly' over any time period. Games can be scheduled on Monday and Wednesday of the first week and Tuesday and Thursday the following week, Friday and Saturday of the third week, and so on. Any varied number of games can be arranged on any date and can be done without too much data entry.

2. I purchased the application in January 99 and I just downloaded the program and installed it and tried to register it with the Niagara Registration Server but the Registration Response it gave me doesn't work! What am I doing wrong?

Generally, when a major update is released, the registration algorithm changes. In order for keys generated by these requests to work, you'll have to insure that you have the most 'up to date version'. The nature of the internet makes it difficult to track all copies of all versions of these programs and this is a way for us to resolve bugs and glitches that were reported and fixed in previous versions.

4. How do I create a cross divisional schedule?

Create a new project as described in the beginner tutorial, then within the Start Object Wizard panel, from the pulldown combobox choice, select 'Cross Divisional Confrontation'. Click next to assign the schedule locations. In the next Teams Object Wizard panel, you'll notice both Teams and Opponents lists are editable. Delete and add teams, using the available interface choices or import teams from the team pools to set up the two lists accordingly.

Essentially, teams in the first list will only play teams listed in the opponents list unless the same team is listed in 'both' lists. Assign constraints, dates, times, etc..as you would with other schedules...

8. Do team, field, official names need to be unique?

For each schedule within a project, in order to accurately track conflicts across the schedules, object names that refer to different entities should be unique.

For example, there is a team called Sharks in the under 8 division and another in the under 16 division. As these are treated as separate teams, they should be identified as U8 Sharks and U16 Sharks.

If you do NOT have Splendid City set to track conflicts across schedules (Options/Preferences ---> Scheduling --> Conflicts and Constraints), then this would not be necessary.

Schedules in different projects do not necessarily need to have unique names unless there is intent to later merge those schedules into projects that have schedules with teams using the same names.

9. How do I move / copy games to another project's schedule?

Use mouse click selection in the Schedule View to select games you would like copied or moved. (To select multiple games in a table use shift click or control key + mouse click for non-adjacent entries (on mac use command key + mouse click for non-adjacent entries).

Then from the Schedule View Frame toolbar select the 'Copy or Move selected games' toolbar button. From the panel presented select the project and desired target schedule and the type of action to perform. Click the 'Go!" pushbutton to execute the action.

10. I have the need to merge all the schedules into one large master schedule and view the master schedule for specific game entities. Can Splendid City do this?

Yes. Simply select the project you would like to see the master schedule for in the Project Viewer Tree. Then look under Menu 'File'--> 'Project' --> 'View Master Schedule'...Then using the combo choice box, select a team, location, player, official from the drop down menu and you see the schedule. Registered users can also export the schedule presented.

Publishing using Splendid City

1. I notice that when I export Single and Double Elimination Tournaments that published schedule is numbered. Is there any way to get the same numbering for my other schedule types?

When exporting schedules, normally numbers are published with Single and Double Elimination tournaments table and bracket views.

To have your other schedule types numbered as well make sure you have the Splendid City --> Options/Preferences -->Output-->Objects-->"Include Round Robin Game Indices" checkbox set to true (checked).

3. I can't seem publish my own league's schedules and instead I see a sample schedule output?

This is an indication that you are a Splendid City Lite user and not a Professional user. Splendid City Lite users may publish project files to be viewed with other copies of the freely distributed Splendid City Lite application. Professional users may copy to additional formats as described here.

Top of Page

4. We would also like to put a few reminder notes of information into every published schedule (i.e.- "teams listed first supply the game ball" etc...) Can we do this already?

There is an editable announcement column on the home page as well as a comments area for each individual team schedule listed. To add a comment for a team in the Edit/Create Team dialog, select 'Comments' from the panel tab choices and enter your team or schedule specific information or when publishing schedules from within the Splendid City Publisher choose the Homepage tab and enter more globally pertinent data (Can be HTML or plain text) in the Homepage Announcement Source text area.

5. Is there any way to publish a master schedule for all the fields?

This can be done in a few ways (Professional Users only). One way would be to select the project in the Project Viewer Tree and from the File-->Project... menu select, "View Master Schedule". Then using the combo box choices at the bottom of the panel, navigate to the name of the field and select Go. You may then export that field schedule using the export to HTML pushbutton. Another useful option for instances when you have multiple master field schedules that need to be published would be to merge all the project schedules into one large master schedule, and publish that master schedule using the Splendid City publisher.

6. Our teams are mostly younger children and we would like to discourage competition at that age. Is there anyway to not publish the schedule standings?

Yes. In the Splendid City Options/Preferences panels uncheck Output --> Objects -->"Included Schedule Standings".

7. How can I print the schedules I created using Splendid City?

Until you decide to upgrade to Splendid City professional, you are relegated to the Splendid City 'sand box' and cannot publish your schedules to external sources.

As of Splendid City Pro version 5.1 inherent printing is supported from within the Schedule View. Also, once a Professional user, you may publish schedules to a host of supported formats where you may choose to print from the plethora of available software that supports these formats, i.e. (HTML --> Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape, Safari, Opera, iCab, Microsoft Excel, other HTML browsers) (CSV --> Microsoft Excel, FileMaker Pro, other spread sheet programs) (iCalendar --> iCal, Mozilla Calendar, Outlook Express, other calendar rendering programs)

Scheduling

1. Can Splendid City seed schedule tournaments based on the results of completed schedule events?

Different clubs or leagues have different seeding priorities. For example, Club 'A' seeds it's tournaments with the strongest teams playing the weakest, where League 'B' chooses a random seeding so as to give the weaker teams more of a chance to 'catch up'. It is because seeding preferences can vary from organization to organization, there is no auto-seeding function currently available in Splendid City.

There is however the ability to seed tournaments directy in the tournament bracket views. Users may click on an event game index to invoke the Game Properties view where the event objects can be modified.

In addition users may use the Splendid City Swap Utility to create a modification script that can be executed directly on a built schedule or as a plugin to be infused into the schedule build process. User Markus Ganz has posted an excellent video example of this here.

2. I need to interleave the games in the various divisions. i.e. I do not want all men games in the morning, all women in the afternoon. I want roughly one men's game, followed by one women's, then one club, etc. How can I do this with Splendid City?

Do the following to achieve this timeslot scheduling effect.

  • In your Splendid City Options/Preferences panel, under Scheduling --> Conflicts and Constraints select "Resolve conflicts locally to within each schedule" Then for each division's game length, specify the total amount of time between the start of the game to that divisions start of the next game, taking into consideration the amount of time necessary to complete the other divisions' games. Build this schedule.
  • Now in subsequent divisions, do the same with the game length parameter however in the times panel choose 'Auto set the game times between...' and specify the 'start' of the next division's games to begin one time slot later than the previous schedule. Build that one.
  • Continue until all your schedules are completed after which you may merge all the schedules into one using the Splendid City Project merge tool.
  • You will see that all your games will be interleaved across divisions. If you would like it mixed more, you can use the Swap Utility to give the early slot to other divisions.

3. Does the software prevent coaches of multiple teams from being scheduled for more than one game at the same time?

Yes, Splendid City can track your player/participants, and if the software finds a conflict, it will attempt to resolve this automatically for you.

You'll need to specify the common coaches as game participants in the teams' roster. Then it will be tracked within each schedule. (as well across schedules provided you have your SC Options/Preferences --> Scheduling --> Conflicts & Constraints --> 'Auto Conflict Resolution' parameter set to 'global' ...)

Remember, the scheduler tracks the 'name' of the player/participants so they should be identical in the different team rosters that they coach. You can enforce this simply by importing them from the player pool within the roster panel. So in other words, if you enter a coach in one roster, you can import this same coach name from the player pool in subsequent rosters.

4. I have figured out how to do our seasons, but have not figured how to put in the playoff and championship games in to the schedule. For example:
We have an 8 game season with 4 teams participating. At the of the eight games, the 4 teams will have elimination playoffs and then the 2 remaining teams will have a championship game. How do I do this?

You can create 2 additional project schedules (Project viewer toolbar --> green plus icon) , named something like: 'Playoff_A' and 'Playoff_B' and set the schedule type as single elimination tournament.

Define this using temporary teams at first (Temp_Team_1, Temp_Team_2, etc), then after the schedule is built, using inspection, replace your temp_teams with the appropriately seeded team confrontations based on the result of your season schedule. You can do this by simply overwriting the team names in the respective team edit/create dialogs (double click the temp_teams in the project viewer project tree). They will update the temp_teams in the built schedule as well. If you are prompted to import existing teams from the pool, say [yes].

Finally, append another new schedule named 'Final' and define the 2 teams playing 1 game as your final game. You can also use hypothetical teams if you wish to define the game time in advance. Hypothetical teams include names that begin with Temp_Team, or WINNER OF or LOSER OF. Hypothetical teams will not show up in the team standings stats.

Publishing will give you all the schedules with teams and locations listed in the home page.

5. Our Little League has 2 divisions American & National 4 teams in each. They play their own division 3 times and the other division only twice. I don't see away to do this with Splendid City.

The way to do this using SC would be to create 3 separate schedules. Two of the schedules would be intra-divisional schedules and only play amoungst themselves. You could choose from the schedules' Object Wizard 'Start' panel any of the round robin schedule types to create the intra-divisional schedules. One schedule could be named 'American' and the other 'National'.

Then, you'll need to create another schedule where the two divisions only play across each division (inter-divisional schedule) but not amoungst themselves. In this case you could name the schedule 'Amer_VS_Nat' and in the Object Wizard Start panel describe the schedule type as 'Cross Divisional Schedule'. Then in the Object Wizard Teams panel populate the 'Teams' list using the American division teams. (You can import them from the Team pool) and populate the 'Opponents' list using the National division teams.

That's it! If you have shared objects (like fields or locations) you should ensure that the object names are identical in each schedule. In your Object Wizard Location panels make sure that the field names match for all the schedules. You can always import the fields from the location pool to make sure they match. It's important that the field names are identical because that is how conflicts are tracked across schedules (by the object name).

You should also make sure you have the Splendid City options/preferences --> Scheduling --> Conflicts and Constraints --> "Resolve Conflicts Globally ..." option checked.

Once you are done, you can 'merge' all of these schedules or use the master schedule after you are done for publishing purposes. Search the terms 'merge project schedule' in the splendid city help for more information on merging multiple schedules contained with a project.

Installation & Troubleshooting

1. Splendid City doesn't want to run. Instead I get the following error:

 java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/swing/plaf/basic/BasicLookAndFeel
    at TeamScheduler.main
    at java/lang/reflect/Method.invoke
    at com/zerog/lax/LAX.launch
    at com/zerog/lax/LAX.main

What am I doing wrong?

BasicLookAndFeel class is a fundamental class packaged with your platform's basic Java installation. This error would indicate that the program cannot find this basic Java Runtime Environment installation (JRE). In this case you'll need uninstall your current SC installation go back to the http://www.splendidcity.net website and choose the full installation download instead OR visit the sun website and install a system wide JRE for all Java applications hosted on your computer.

2. I'm using Mac OS X. Do I need to install Java on my computer to run Splendid City?

No. Java comes by default with the Macintosh OS X platform. You WILL need to have a minimum of Mac OS X v10.2.6 in order to allow the application to download Java 1.4.1 or higher which is required by Splendid City to run.

Top of Page

3. I'm running Panther on Mac OS X, and Splendid City keeps crashing. Is it OS X 10.3 compatible?

We already have Mac customers that run Splendid City on Panther, with no problems. However there are reports that the Panther install breaks the Apple Java VM on some systems. This means that no Java applications will run. An easy way to see if you have this problem is to open the the Terminal application, you will find it in your Applications->Utilities folder.

Type the following command:

Java -version

You should see the following message displayed:

HotSpot not at correct virtual address. Sharing disabled.

If you do, you have the problem. Apple appears to be working on this:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120242

There is a quick fix to this problem :

Rename:

/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework

to

/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework.off

Next, load the Panther installer, and perform a "Custom" install of ONLY the "Essential System Software" (which includes Java). When it finishes, you will find a brand new JavaVM.framework directory, and "java -version" reports "builder 1.4.1_01-99", as it should. Once everything works, you can delete the JavaVM.framework.off directory.

4. I previously installed the full Windows version of Splendid City (with the bundled JRE), and am interested in upgrading my software to the latest version. Do I need to reinstall the full version, or should I download the version without the JRE?

You should do neither one. The JRE that comes bundled with Splendid City runs 'locally' to that copy of the software only. The distribution that ships without the JRE is for computers that have a Java JRE installed, and it is globally accessible to all Java applications running on that computer, so if you do not have a global JRE installed, this distribution will not run (see Installation and Troubleshooting question #1), regardless of whether you have installed the full version previously or not.

If you have already installed the full Windows/Unix/Linux version, you should instead download only the update file (Not available for version 6.0). Once update file has been delivered and uncompressed, simply follow the INSTALLATION README directions to upgrade your full installation of Splendid City. Essentially, you simply replace one file in your Splendid City installation directory.

5. I upgraded to Professional 6.0 from the Lite so that I can print my schedules and now the product doesn't schedule properly at all.

You'll need to move your SplendidCity_Prefs file to the new location as detailed in this Splendid City version 6.0 What's New blog entry.

6. I click the Schedule View Report toolbar button and the report just shows a blank screen. Where's the schedule report I usually see there?

This has been resolved since Splendid City version 6.3 was released. Please download the lastest version from here.

7. How come I can't get the Windows Vista aero graphics when I run Splendid City?

For Windows Vista the Java 1.6 runtime environment is recommended. You can download and install this library for free from here.

8. Will Splendid City be supported on Mac OS 10.7 code named 'Lion'? I hear Apple is deprecating Apple's implementation of Java on the Mac. I'm curious what Niagara Software's take on this issue is. Is this the end of Java on the Mac or will Oracle be picking the project up?

As per the Apple-Oracle Nov 12th announcement, Java 6 WILL be shipping with Mac OS 10.7 'Lion' and Apple has plegded to contribute to Oracle's OpenJDK project starting with version 7. The future has never looked brighter for Java on the Mac platform.
